![]() When you consider how frequently Microsoft updates the Surface tablets’ firmware-once a month-and the compare that to the track record with Windows Phone, you see the issue. Despite the best of intentions, Microsoft cannot upgrade the Windows Phone OS regularly, let alone on the monthly schedule they should be using. Here, as always, we see Windows Phone’s Achilles Heel. Windows Phone 8-the OS-makes competing mobile OSes look sad by comparison. I have never felt that this was a serious issue beyond perception and that users’ fascination with apps is a temporary thing, an immaturity that will fade away as we become more comfortable with-and less awed by-these powerful little mobile computers. The one regular ding is the apps selection: Critics still point out that some critical apps, like Instagram, are not present on Windows Phone 8. ![]() Windows Phone 8 is a full-featured, mature, and capable mobile operating system that is not lacking in any meaningful way. (And yes, some Windows Phone 8 features are of course tied to the new core.) This will bring enormous advantages going forward. Under the hood, however, we see the real revolution, though precious little in Windows Phone 8 points to any major realized benefits from this change: Previously based on Windows CE, Windows Phone 8 is now based on Windows 8. The user experience is pure evolution, which makes sense, since the initial Windows Phone 7 release, in 2010, was an explosion of innovation, a smart phone platform that wasn’t just different to be different, but both different and better than the competition.
